Journey and Journal
아침에 일어나 쾌활함jollity을 느끼지 못할 때면 앞으로는 밤 늦게 먹지 말자고 매번 굳게 결심하지만resolute 쉽게 몸에 대한 방종extravagance을 억제하지inhibit 못하는 것을 보면 아직도 내게 미국의 향락주의epicurean가 지긋지긋하게abominable 물리지는sated 않은 듯 하다.
삶에는 요양지sanatorium도, 대리surrogate도 없기에 매일 하루의 성실한 수행원attache이 되기위해선 결심만으론 안된다. 선언proclamation을 해야한다. 국회에서도 매번 결의안을 내지만 잘 지켜지지 않듯이.
Midland School 교장이자 내 담임이었던 그는 견학으로 뮤지컬을 보고 난 후, 삶이 뮤지컬과 같다면 얼마나 아름다울까라고 학생들에게 말했다. 당시에는 나도 마음 한편에 손발 오글거림을 물리치고 순간 감동이 몰아쳤지만 나중에 학기말에 학생들이 operreta처럼 짧게 연출한 Grease를 보면서는 사실 손발이 오글거렸다. 그는 그렇게 뮤지컬을 흡족한 듯이 바라보았지만gloat 학생들과 어울려 노는 타입이기 보다는 훈계admonition하는 타입이었다.
오늘 읽은 부분에서는 직장에서 신경이 곤두서 집에 돌아온 아버지가 반가워 서서히 다가오지encroach 못해 달려오는 아이들을 호되게 꾸짖는berate 모습을 묘사했다. 주변에 침체된morbid 내면을 억지로 숨기려 하는 이들이 그렇게 자라온 이들일까?
